Secretary of State, under Washington, from 1790 to 1793; vice-president from 1796-1801; president, 1801-1809. As President of the American Philosophical Society, from 1797 to 1815, Jefferson actively promoted geographical, paleontological, botanical, and linguistic studies in the United States.
